Royal Geelong Yacht Club
On the waterfront of Corio Bay Geelong, the Royal Geelong Yacht Club is one of Australia’s most successful yacht clubs.
The Royal Geelong Yacht Club welcomes sailing and social patrons alike. The clubrooms offer a cafe and a fully licensed bar.
The Royal Geelong Yacht Club prides itself on being a family club, with generations of families having contributed to the rich culture that the organisation now enjoys. Following the huge success of the “Geelong Regatta”, now known as the “Festival of Sails”, which was first held on Corio Bay in 1844, the enthusiastic organising committee unanimously voted for the formation of the “Geelong Yacht Club” in 1859. Later on the 27th Day of March 1924 the Club was granted a Royal Warrant and became the Royal Geelong Yacht Club.
From these humble beginnings the club has grown to be the home to “the best sailing experience you can have”, with over 1100 Members ranging in age from 5 to 90. Being an innovative club, strategic to introducing sailing to the community and strengthening the membership base are always uppermost in planning the way ahead.
The Royal Geelong Yacht Club has made a major commitment to Discover Sailing and continues to develop youth involvement, transitional pathways from junior to senior sailing, ladies racing and advancing the skills of current sailors. Concerted efforts to boost training at the club have been made through the purchase of Pacers, Ozi Opti Dinghies, a new power boat and a Status 580, along with the appointment of a Sailing Academy Coordinator to oversee the programs.
The Royal Geelong Yacht Club’s support and enthusiasm for sailing doesn’t end there. The club is committed to hosting State, National and World events for a number of different classes. The club is in the perfect location to host these championships, boasting a north facing marina and has a respectable and extensive record of hosting major events. Apart from hosting over 170 major keelboat Regattas, now known as the “Festival of Sails”, the club has been home to the Cadet State titles, the Australian Moth Championships, The Australian Melges, The Australian Etchells Championships, Sydney 38s National titles, the Melges Worlds, the i14 Worlds and in 2017 will host the Viper World Championships.
Royal Geelong Yacht Club looks forward to welcoming you to the Festival of Sails in 2017!
