New Under 25 trophy for Passage Race

The best young sailors will be acknowledged with a new trophy at the 2016 FOS.

The first skipper, aged 25 or under, with a majority of crew aged under 25 to cross the line in the historic Passage Race on Saturday January 23 will be awarded the inaugural Gill Australia Under 25 Trophy.

2016 FOS Chairman Chris Williams said he was delighted the 2016 Festival of Sails will offer the Gill Australia Under 25 Trophy as recognition of the skills and talents of young sailors.

“The RGYC is particularly proud of the success of our young sailors and this is another way to support and encourage their efforts in the sport,” Chris said.

At 24, RGYC’s Will Baum will be one of the young skippers hoping to snare the inaugural trophy in his boat Two Farr. In 2015 Will took third place in the performance racing division, coming in at 5hr 23min 18sec.

“All my mixed crew are under 25, I think we’ll sail with eight, enough to keep everyone busy without getting in each other’s way,” Will said.

Gill Australia is a proud sponsor of the 2016 Festival of Sails. Director Paul Schulz said Gill was thrilled to support young sailors as they expand their sailing experience: “The introduction of the Gill Australia Under 25 Trophy will encourage and recognise younger sailors who are testing their capabilities in Australia’s biggest sailing regatta.”
