A chat with the Skipper.
Festival of Sails: What is your best memory/achievement sailing on this boat?
Heat: We’ve owned the Viper sports boat for less than a year and so far we’ve competed at Sail Port Stephens, Sydney Harbour Regatta (2nd), NSW Sports Boat titles and many Wednesday afternoon club races plus the sprint series hosted by the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club.
FOS: What do you love most about your boat?
Heat: Speed, being right on the edge in big breeze, racing as a family crew and teaching the kids to sail while sitting next to them, rather than watching from a distance
FOS: How many times have you sailed in FOS?
Heat: Once, in 2016 as crew White Noise
FOS: Why have you chosen to compete in FOS 2017?
Heat: We decided to spend January in Victoria racing and holidaying, starting with the RL24 Australian Championship at Paynesville with the boat we have been trying to sell. Seeing we still own it, we thought why not race it? Then we’ll bring the Viper 640 to the Festival of Sails, so that’s two boat tows down from Sydney.
FOS: Do you have your crew confirmed? If so, mention them here!
Heat: Tyler Ratcliff, 15 (helm), Luke Ratcliff (skipper), Paul Ratcliff (main/bow), Katrina Ratcliff (terror on the water and off), Harley Ratcliff, 11 & the only sensible one among the crew. That’s five Ratcliffs on one small boat…we hope the POB is the same by the last day of racing!!!
Heat will be competing in the Sports boat division. Best of luck to Skipper Luke Ratcliff and crew!
