“Sailor Girl” Nic Douglass announced as Festival of Sails Ambassador

The Royal Geelong Yacht Club is proud to announce that Australian sailing personality Nic Douglass has been appointed as ambassador for the Festival of Sails 2017.

A true icon in the sailing world, Nic – also known as the Sailor Girl – is a former two-time World and six-time Australian champion in the Tasar class with grade one and Olympic World Cup regattas under her belt. She is also an experienced broadcaster, commentating sailing events and racing action all over the world, with her own segment on sailing TV shows in Europe and the United States of America.

Peter Alexander, Festival of Sails Chairman at the Royal Geelong Yacht Club, said having the Sailor Girl on board was a great coup for the largest keelboat regatta in the southern hemisphere.

“As the ambassador for Festival of Sails 2017, Nic will be our on-the-ground commentator, documenting the race action and shoreside activities through social media, interviews and videos, basically showcasing everything the event has to offer to a local, national and international audience,” said Mr Alexander.

The Sailor Girl herself said she was very excited to be an ambassador for an Australian sailing event, particularly one as prestigious as the Festival of Sails.

“Last year I was involved with more than 40 sailing events all over the world, and I love experiencing sailing communities in different countries, but I am a proud Aussie and feel privileged to be the ambassador for an Australian event, especially over the Australia Day long weekend,” said Ms Douglass.

“I sailed the Festival of Sails in 2006, 2007 and 2008, and it was actually my first race week and yacht regatta, and what really struck me back then was the great atmosphere and the mateship between sailors and teams – and I’m really looking forward to see how the event has grown over the years.”

“I’m particularly looking forward to the Passage Race, the Australia Day fireworks, some big boat racing action and to just generally soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the event – both shoreside and on the water.

“And it wouldn’t be called Adventures of a Sailor Girl if I didn’t give the Rex Gorell Land Rover Terrapod a go!”

The Notice of Race for the 2017 Festival of Sails will be published in August, at which time entries will open online.
