A chat with the Skipper.
Festival of Sails: What has been your best memory/achievement sailing on this boat?
Prime Example: Our best memories are twofold.
- We were competing in the first race of the Airlie Beach Race Week in 2014 and it was blowing hard. We set a fractional asymmetrical spin for the long reach out to Double Cone Island which was spectacular as we consistently hit speeds of over 20 knots. Thrilling sailing and constantly on the edge of disaster but the crew handled the yacht superbly and we finished on the podium.
- The many ladies races that we have competed in with a full complement of women crew members.
FS: What do you love most about your boat?
PE: The thing we love most about our yacht is the crew that sail with us. We have had so many wonderful times on board Prime Example and the Festival of sails Regatta 2016 will again see a mixed crew of 7 blokes and 6 ladies all of whom (except for the rich owner) come from Sydney.
FS: How many times have you sailed in FOS?
PE: I have been sailing for 58 years and have forgotten how many Geelong regattas that I have done but it would be over 30!!
FOS: Why have you chosen to compete in FOS 2017?
PE: The Festival of Sails Regatta is one of if not the best racing regatta in Australia. It is superbly organized with wonderful entertainment and lots of things for family and friends who may not be competing to be involved in.
FOS: Do you have your crew confirmed? If so, mention them here!
PE: Prime Example was launched in the early 1990’s and is a heavy displacement yacht of 52 feet. Our crew consists of highly experienced yachties and also crew members who are doing their first regatta! We have an international crew with Dominika from Poland. Joanna Poland and France. Beryl France. Brigitte Austria. Helen England. Charlotte (Charlie), David Fairclough and ‘Squirrel’ New Zealand. Gerry Nymyer (Holland) and David Ivanovic (Serbia)
Prime Example is a Davidson 52, we wish Skipper Leigh Dorrington and crew the best of luck.
