Festival Of Sails

Plenty of winners at Festival of Sails 2016

Across five days of intense sailing competition, with 2,500 sailors battling it out in 124 races in a variety of divisions, the Royal Geelong Yacht Club handed out 85 trophies throughout the entire event.

Two national titles were awarded, with Jen and Brenton Carnell’s Phoenix sealing its second consecutive Morris Finance Sydney 38 Australian Championship, and Brett Whitbread and Joel McDonald’s Sticky Fingers from Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron winning the Bausele VX One Australian Championship.

South Australian yacht Secret Mens Business clinched the overall win in the Rex Gorell Land Rover Rating Series, needing all eight races to finally get ahead of Sydney-based Patrice, while PP1 – also from Sydney – narrowly beat Poco Loco in the Optimum Time Super 11 Series.

The five day event also saw the cruising and classic yachts, multihulls and S80s sailing across Geelong’s Corio Bay, providing a stunning backdrop to one of Australia’s oldest sporting events, the annual Festival of Sails presented by Rex Gorell Land Rover.

Principal Race Officer Denis Thompson “It’s been another great regatta, having wind always helps. We had typical and fairly steady Geelong sou’easters every day, that always makes the competitors happy and it makes regatta management a little bit easier. Plus the racing is super close. No-one can skip away.”
