The 2025 Festival of Sails is set to host one of the largest Learn to Sail programs in Australia’s history. As part of the festival’s exciting lineup, free “Come & Try Sailing” sessions will take place on Day 1 and Day 2 of the Festival, giving both locals and visitors the unique opportunity to experience the thrill of sailing firsthand.
The response has been overwhelming, with over 528 participants already signed up for the Come & Try Sailing sessions, making this the largest Learn to Sail program Australia has ever seen. Taking place on January 25 and 26, 2025, these sessions have officially sold out, reflecting the growing enthusiasm for sailing in the Geelong community.
Unlike traditional “off the beach” dinghies, the Come & Try Sailing sessions will be held on state-of-the-art RS21 keelboats. This offers participants a stable and comfortable platform to enjoy their first sailing experience, with a trained instructor on board to guide them every step of the way. The RS21s provide a fantastic introduction to the sport, ensuring that everyone, regardless of experience, can enjoy the thrill of gliding across the water without the worry of getting wet.
“We’re ecstatic about the volume of sign-ups and are excited to have the opportunity to expose such a large number of people from the Geelong community to the sport of sailing,” said Drew Malcolm, Sailing & Boating Manager at the Royal Geelong Yacht Club. “The Come & Try Sailing program is a great way for everyone—regardless of experience—to get out on the water and experience the excitement of sailing in a safe and enjoyable way.”
The Come & Try Sailing experience is open to all ages and abilities, making it the perfect family activity, or a fun way to try something new solo. With easy access from Wangim Walk, the sailing sessions are just steps away from the heart of the Festival, allowing participants to seamlessly transition from the water to the vibrant festival atmosphere.
There’s no experience needed—just a sense of adventure! This free, fun-filled activity is a must-do during the Festival of Sails and offers a perfect way to explore the beauty of Corio Bay.
Although registrations have officially sold out, the Royal Geelong Yacht Club is encouraging people to join the waiting list online or come down to Wangim Walk on January 25 or 26. There may be last-minute opportunities, and we’ll do our best to get everyone out on the water and ensure no one misses this incredible experience.
