This January long weekend, Geelong’s vibrant waterfront will once again come alive with colour, energy, and sails as the Festival of Sails returns for its 2025 edition—inviting locals and visitors alike to soak up one of Australia’s most iconic summer events.
Held from Saturday 25 to Monday 27 January, the Festival of Sails is not only Australia’s largest keelboat regatta, but also a free, family-friendly event that offers three days of action on the water and entertainment on land—all set against the stunning backdrop of Corio Bay.
With over 300 yachts expected to compete and thousands of spectators lining the shore, the festival kicks off with the historic 182nd Melbourne to Geelong Passage Race, a spectacle that draws sailing fans and curious visitors from across the country. This year, for the first time ever, the tall ship STS Young Endeavour will lead the fleet as the official start boat, firing the cannon to commence the race—a not-to-be-missed moment for maritime lovers.
Beyond the sailing, visitors can enjoy a diverse entertainment program, featuring live music, pop-up dining precincts, family activities, roving performers, local market stalls, and a dazzling fireworks show on Saturday night. Featured artists include Queen Forever, one of Australia’s top tribute bands, and Southern River Band, bringing high-octane rock energy to the waterfront stage.
The Festival also proudly showcases Geelong’s best hospitality, with highlights including Paddock by the Bay at Fairnie Park and the Foredeck by Woolstore, where food, drinks, and unbeatable views combine for the perfect summer outing.
This year, the Come & Try Sailing program—Australia’s largest of its kind—will give over 500 people the chance to get out on the water in a free sailing experience aboard modern RS21 keelboats, right from Wangim Walk.
Whether you’re visiting for the first time or making it a family tradition, the Festival of Sails is the perfect reason to spend the long weekend in Geelong—a city bursting with culture, coastline, and community spirit. With easy access from Melbourne, stunning beaches, award-winning restaurants, and now, a world-class festival in full swing—there’s never been a better time to visit Greater Geelong.
